14 years in PETRONAS
Malaysian national oil company, founded in 1974. A Fortune 500 Global company since 1997 (currently ranked 139) and also in Forbes Global 2000 (erroneously listed as PETRONAS Chemicals). Together with Mercedes AMG, the team won 8 consecutive F1 constructor's championships, spanning from 2014 to 2021.
Technical Experience
Process Engineer/Technologist
PETRONAS Upstream, 2017-2023
General scope: Provided process engineering solutions, managed deviations, and ensured compliance with safety and technical standards to maximize plant availability and production performance.
-
Debottlenecked an offshore gas central processing platform (CPP) from 550 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) to 600MMscfd.
- Reviewed process adequacy of separators, compressors, cooling system, flare system, export pipeline, produced water treatment system.
- Organized and engaged in multidisciplinary management of change (MOC) review with experts, presented to management.
- Additional 50MMscfd generated an additional USD120m/yr for the company.
-
Reviewed multiple projects related to offshore gas platform and onshore gas-and-condensate terminal including
- Infill drilling
- Process simplification
- New gas terminal
- Condensate recovery plant
- Condensate tie-in to existing plant
Each project review includes PFD & P&ID reviews, simulation models and basis, HAZOP, IPF among others.
-
Conducted various safety assessments to ensure compliance, including
- Flare adequacy
- Relief (PSV) adequacy
- Alarm management
- IPF classification
- Periodic HAZOP
- Alignment of cause-and-effect matrix (CEM) with trips (SIS)
-
Process engineering resource person of multiple incident investigations and root cause failure analysis, providing insights from a process engineering perspective.
Incident investigations
- Condensate pump fire
- Compressor rotor chipped
- Gas release during flange break
Failure analysis
- Pump frequent failure
- Plant cascading trip
- Offshore high oil-in-water discharge
Technical Experience
Process Safety
PETRONAS Upstream, 2011-2017
General scope: Ensured the process safety and compliance to standards by enforcing 8 process safety aspects, conducted hazard analyses, and implemented mitigation strategies; planned and executed assurances of hard safety barriers to ensure minimal risks of operations.
-
Part of PSM pioneering team in PETRONAS Upstream, specifically at Peninsular Malaysia operations.
Tracked development of standards and guidelines, conducted roadshows to offshore platforms, onshore terminals and offices, conducted trainings and streamlined development of operating procedures.
-
Streamlined process safety key indicators reporting to upper management.
Standardized definitions of key indicators and method of tracking, performed monthly reporting to upper management, providing key insights on areas of focus and work to be done.
-
Developed loss of containment (LOC) calculation sheet which becomes the basis of the Company’s online LOC calculator.
Soft Skills

- Terminal flaring reduction
- Economics study of flare-reduction projects
- Submitted entry on carbon reduction competition
Work Philosophy
-
Know what you don't know
Every challenge is surmountable. We just need to identify what is not known yet but needs to be known, then seek advice from the experts.
-
Safety first, not even production can come before safety
Management shall make it clear that staff must not be punished when production is halted due to safety concerns.
-
Single source of truth
Every data must be stored only once at one place. All other resources that uses the same data must refer to the original source. For example, a high level trip setpoint is stored in a safe operating limit (SOL) database. If an operating procedure requires mentioning the setpoint, it must link to the database, rather than rewriting it. Should the setpoint be revised, the procedure will be automatically updated as well.
-
No data destruction
All data must never be deleted; if digital housekeeping is necessary, it must be archived only. All data contains insights. Even errors such as typo gives insights on human error and how to detect/fix them.
-
Seek general solutions; if a similar problem reoccurs, use previous solutions and improve.
For example, if a project undergoes an economics feasibility study, do a general template with consistent assumptions. If a new project comes, use the template and base it against the same principles as previous projects.
