Technical Experience

Process Safety

PETRONAS Upstream, 2011-2017

General scope: Ensured the process safety and compliance to standards by enforcing 8 process safety aspects, conducted hazard analyses, and implemented mitigation strategies; planned and executed assurances of hard safety barriers to ensure minimal risks of operations.

  • Tracked development of standards and guidelines, conducted roadshows to offshore platforms, onshore terminals and offices, conducted trainings and streamlined development of operating procedures.

  • Standardized definitions of key indicators and method of tracking, performed monthly reporting to upper management, providing key insights on areas of focus and work to be done.

Soft Skills

Leadership

  • Senior engineer for 2 years, overseeing capability development of one junior engineer and multiple trainees/interns. Projects tasked to them include:

    • Liquid handling capacity calculation
    • Flare purging adequacy
    • Development of safe operating limit (SOL) database
    • Development of operating procedures

Attended train-the-trainer training. Conducted training to various company subsidiaries on

    • Process safety management (PSM) awareness
    • Management of change (MOC)

Passionate in sharing knowledge on diverse and wide-array of topics

    • Carbon sequestration
    • Gratitude and empathy
    • Extracting data from Excel files using Power Query
    • Plant overview of offshore gas complex
    • Plant overview of gas and condensate terminal
    • Novel blowdown adequacy verification
  • Organized over 20 sessions of casual chat sessions during 1.5 years of COVID-19 lockdown and work from home (WFH).

    • Terminal flaring reduction
    • Economics study of flare-reduction projects
    • Submitted entry on carbon reduction competition

Work Philosophy

  • Every challenge is surmountable. We just need to identify what is not known yet but needs to be known, then seek advice from the experts.

  • Management shall make it clear that staff must not be punished when production is halted due to safety concerns.

  • Every data must be stored only once at one place. All other resources that uses the same data must refer to the original source. For example, a high level trip setpoint is stored in a safe operating limit (SOL) database. If an operating procedure requires mentioning the setpoint, it must link to the database, rather than rewriting it. Should the setpoint be revised, the procedure will be automatically updated as well.

  • All data must never be deleted; if digital housekeeping is necessary, it must be archived only. All data contains insights. Even errors such as typo gives insights on human error and how to detect/fix them.

  • For example, if a project undergoes an economics feasibility study, do a general template with consistent assumptions. If a new project comes, use the template and base it against the same principles as previous projects.
